Horse - the $50k tournament of champions at the World Series of Poker

Welcome to Poker Unchecked, finally a book that makes poker easy to understand. This book is the straight talk express without the NY Times article. You want the truth (about poker), you can't handle the truth.

HORSE is a form of poker where you play five different games. They are all limit (which means fixed betting).

The H stands for Texas Holdem, the O stands for Omaha 8 or better (a split game). The R stands for Razz, a stud variation of lowball with A2345 being the lowest hand. The S stands for Seven Card Stud, and the E stands for Stud Eight or better (a split form of seven card stud).

The pro's attitude regarding horse is that it tests abilities at numerous games instead of just one game. Horse is a poker game for the more complete poker player.

The cons to the horse poker game is the following:

Some games play larger than others. This means they are far more important to the winning of the game than other games, due to amounts of players in the pots and the volume of hands dealt out.

In cash games of the past, the game was played with a person receiving a card and having him name the starting game. Say he picked Razz? The next game would be Stud, followed by Stud 8 or better, then Holdem and Omaha 8 or better.

Some players would rather play more skillful games which can add more value to their abilities. Also, in the games of the past(just over 5 years ago) the games were played by the hand, not by the time period as they are today in the horse tournament format.

In today's game, texas holdem has about twice as many hands dealt out as Stud 8, besides being played more often.

Omaha 8 pots are far bigger than Razz pots, which are normally small.

With the faster pace of the game, besides the fewer cards dealt in flop games, it's easy to understand why flop games can dominate the horse action.

Poker Unchecked goes into how to equalize some of these things.

Poker Unchecked is the book that makes poker fun again.
