Seven Card Stud: strategy secrets by Russ Georgiev
Welcome to Poker Unchecked, finally a book that makes poker easy to understand. This book is the straight talk express without the NY Times article. You want the truth (about poker), you can't handle the truth.
Seven Card Stud is considered by many as being the most skillful limit game, it would certainly have to appear in the top 2 of most pro player's lists. I prefer Stud 8. It has more variations and probabilities.
Whatever way you look at it, Stud (limit) games require more skill than flop games like Texas Hold'em or Omaha, if only for the fact there are three large bets in Stud vs two in flop games.
Live cards play an important role in Stud simply because you see far more cards in play in Stud games than you do in flop games.
Initially, in a full (8 handed) ring game, 8 cards are shown before any betting, outside the ante is made. When you see that some of the out cards are those you need, it's time to fold and wait for the next hand.
Stud is a game of high cards and high pairs, not low cards and low pairs. Three flush starts should be treated accordingly, as high three card flush draws have the bonus potential of allowing you to make high pairs. Additionally, flush vs flush is not uncommon in Stud. So here's another reason you're better off with high card flush starts.
Ante and bring-in ratios should be major determining factors of your original starting hands. In small limits, ante's are 1/10 (.50 in $5-$10). The bring-in is $1, perhaps $2 or 20%-40% of the opening bet.
In larger games, such as $75-$150 or $150-$300, the ante's are either $15 for the $75-$150 or $30 for the $150-$300. Bring-ins are normally 33% compared to the normal 20% in small games.
This means that when you're in small level games you should use a far different approach than you would in larger level games.
