Stud Eight or better strategy and secrets by Russ Georgiev

Welcome to Poker Unchecked, finally a book that makes poker easy to understand. This book is the straight talk express without the NY Times article. You want the truth (about poker), you can't handle the truth.

Stud Eight or better is a split game played in a stud format.

The first 2 cards are dealt down and the next one is dealt up. A round of betting starts off the action with the low up card opening the pot with a mandatory bet.

The game is usually played in a limit format. After the 1st round of betting is completed, another up card is dealt. This time the action is on the high hand who must either bet or check. The action then continues clockwise as in all poker games.

After 4th street (the 4th card) betting is completed, a 5th card is dealt and the play continues. However, in all Stud games the bets now double for the remaining 3 bets. In limit flop games only the last 2 bets are double bets.

This makes any form of Stud more complicated as 3 large bets are allowed.

After 5th street betting is over another round of betting ensues with the 6th card dealt face up.

The last round of betting comes after the final and 7th card is dealt. This time it's face down. Getting your final card is known as the "river" in all poker games, though 7th street is acceptable.

The game should be approached from a low perspective with starting hands being small straights A-2-3, 3-4-5, 3-5-6 and such. Obviously, small straight flush starters are great, with the best being roll-ups (3 of a kind starters).

High hand and low hand split the pot. High and low can easily be in the same hand. Besides being a straight, A-2-3-4-5 (known as a wheel) is the best possible low. Getting quartered in this game is rare. Playing high pairs in this game is a no-no, except on rare occasions (discussed in Poker Unchecked).

Ante ratios and mandatory opening bet ratios play a large part in the quality of beginning hands. (Also discussed in Poker Unchecked.)

Poker Unchecked is the book that makes poker fun again.
