Texas Hold'em poker: the secrets to get the best of it

Welcome to Poker unchecked, finally a book that makes poker easy to understand. This book is the straight talk express without the NY Times article. You want the truth (about poker), you can't handle the truth.

Poker can be classified as many different games played with cards. It can and is played in many ways, forms and styles. In today's world, Texas Holdem is the most popular poker game. However, even Texas Hold'em is also played in different styles, such as Limit (a structured betting pattern), Pot Limit, where the largest bet is the size of the pot and, No Limit, the current King of this game of Texas Holdem, where you are limited in betting by the amount of money you have on the table in front of you. Other variations of poker will be discussed as you go down the navigation bar. One thing about all forms of Texas Holdem, they all have the same betting structure (in scale for size).

Texas Holdem is played in the following format:

1. Maximum number of players at a table is 10 or nine, depending on the venue.

2. Holdem is a dealer position game (meaning the dealer always has an edge). The edge comes from being the last one to bet thus allowing him to see the betting in front of him (being last to decide on playing or not is an advantage in texas holdem).

3. To compensate for this, the game is played with Blinds (modified ante) and a button which moves clockwise with each hand allowing everyone to have a chance at dealing and equalizing the game.

4. The size of the game is determined by the blinds (two player automatic bets into the pot before the cards are dealt). The larger the blinds, the larger the game.

5. The start of the poker game is conducted in the following manner. Once the button is determined (first hand is usually determined by dealing a card to each player and the one having the high card is now the button.

6. Following this, the next two players to the left of the button put blinds into the pot to start the action. The first blind is normally half the next blind (example $5 for the first or normally called the SB or small blind, and twice the amount for the second blind (in our example $10) or big blind.

7. Next comes the dealer delivering two cards face down to each player. These are his/her cards and theirs only. Now a round of betting begins.

8. During the opening round of betting the BB (big blind) is last to act on the first round of action).

9. Action starts off with the first person left of the blinds do either of the following, calling, raising or folding. The action then continues around the table.

10. After the first round of betting, three cards are placed face up on the table. These are called community cards and are used by all players in the formation of the best possible 5 card poker hand. More betting takes place.

11. Another card is turned up on the table. It is also a community card. More betting takes place after this card. Note with 4 community cards on the table each player remaining in the hand can now use either 4 or 3 community cards and 1 or 2 of their cards to form the best 5 card poker hand.

12. Finally, a fifth and final card is turned up on the table and another round of betting ensues.

13. All the cards on the table are community cards and are/can be used by all players. The winner of the hand is either the last person in the hand or the person able to produce the best five card hand using the five community cards and the two cards that are theirs. They are all interchangeable.
